CHILDREN were visited by a special political guest as part of their school council elections.

Basingstoke MP Maria Miller was on hand during the election at Four Lanes Junior School, in Chineham.

Youngsters from each of the 12 classes cast their votes to decide who would represent them on the school council and take part in important decisions.

Head teacher Martyn Gamble said: “The elections are very important because it allows the children to have a say in what goes on at the school and understand why certain decisions are made.”

Elections are held at the school twice a year, with the chosen candidate serving on the school council for six months.

Mr Gamble said: “The children who want to be nominated need someone to second them and then they make a speech to their classmates on why they should be elected.”

The council plays an important part in the life of the school, meeting monthly and holding sway on decisions such as the anti bullying policy and |redecoration of facilities.

Mrs Miller believes it is important children learn about democracy.

She said: “I think what is so good about the school’s elections is they give children a real taste of democracy.

“The children were so enthusiastic and, hopefully, they will understand the importance of national voting, especially at a time when turnout is so low.”
