HARTLEY Wintney were crowned Combined Counties League Premier Division champions last night after they won at Westfield 2-0.
The Row clinched the title after surviving a torrid second half against a useful Westfield side.
Hartley started well and on 10 minutes Sam Argent and Andre Williams combined well with Williams shooting just past the post.
Three minutes later Argent managed to get close to a Steven Duff free kick and headed just past.
Westfield had their first effort on 20 minutes when Ryan Marklew sent in a low shot which Craig Atkinson saved comfortably. Soon after, a 25 yard free-kick for Hartley was taken by Duff who fired just over the bar.
Then three minutes before the interval, the Row broke the deadlock, as Duff received a pass some 25 yards out and fired a fierce low shot past Stuart Norman in the Westfield goal. After the interval, the home side started brightly and put pressure on the Hartley goal.
A right wing corner was headed just past the post by Karle Carder-Andrews and then Andrew Mensah was unlucky to see his shot on 58 minutes deflected for a corner.
Ten minutes later, the same player created space in the penalty area, but his shot was blocked.
A minute later it was almost third time lucky for Mensah.
He found space some 20 yards out and his lobbed shot beat Craig Atkinson all ends up only for the ball to strike the crossbar and come out.
With nine minutes left, a long ball from the ring wing found substitute Lewis Old at the back post and his downward header brought an excellent save from Atkinson.
Three minutes later, Hartley made sure of the victory as. Sam Argent and substitute Ross Cook combined well on the edge of the box, before Cook beat the last defender and fired a low shot into the net.
A minute later, The Row had a lucky let off when Shane Hollomby in attempting to clear a dangerous left wing cross, smashed the ball against the underside of his own crossbar.
Westfield continued to press and a free-kick from Phil Moore went inches past the post. Just before the end Atkinson produced another good save from Carder-Andrews.
The final whistle brought much celebration from the Hartley Wintney side management and followers. They have had an unforgettable season and under joint managers Anthony Millerick and Dan Brownlie are very worthy league champions. In addition to the league they also had a fantastic run in the FA Vase where they started at the first qualifying round and reached the fifth round proper, where they lost to Hereford, who are red hot favourites to win the competition. In addition they started in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup and reached the third qualifying round losing out only to an added time goal to National League South side Eastbourne Borough.
