BASINGSTOKE and Mid Hants sprinter Kieran Showler-Davis is hoping to return from the World Junior Championship in Canada with a couple of medals.
The 18-year-old ran a new personal best of 20.75sec to claim the 200m British title last month and that ensured a place in the national team at the championships in Moncton.
Showler-Davis, flew out this week with the 45-strong team for a training camp on Prince Edward Island and will be in action next Thursday with the heats in the morning and the semi-finals in the evening.
If successful and the sprinter is hopeful he will be, the final of the event is the following day again in the evening.
The Basingstoke club runner is also part of the 4x100m relay squad, but success in his specialist event will see him miss the heats, although he hopes to take part in the final on the Saturday (July 24).
Talking to The Gazette before leaving for North America for his first ever trip to Canada, Showler-Davis said: “I am really looking forward to the challenge and I feel in good shape.
“This is going to be the first time at an event like this and I feel running in the evening, under the floodlights, will suit me as I train under lights.
“My aim is to the make the final and from there I would hope to get a medal as I think the other runners will make me run faster.”
Turning his attention to the relay he said: “We have a good team and we are ranked fourth in the world and that was when we messed up a couple of changeovers so I think we can shave half a second off that time and that certainly puts us in with a chance of a medal.”
