BASINGSTOKE Town manager Frank Gray admits he is concerned by his side’s lack of goals – but insists that the strikers are not to blame.

The Camrose club are currently 10th in the Blue Square South table, but have only found the net four times in their opening six games.

Strikers David Pratt and Greg Draper have just one goal between them – but the manager says that his side are not creating enough chances for them.

“We are not scoring enough goals but we have got to create more chances to score, so it is not the strikers that are the problem,” he said.

“For all of our possession we are not creating enough clear-cut opportunities.”

Gray has also been criticised for operating with just one man in attack – but has defended the 4-5-1 formation that he seems to favour this season.

“People have been saying we should play with more people up front but we have played with two in attack in two away games and not scored a goal,” he said. “The only time we have scored goals is when we have had one striker.

“There is no instant solution, we have just got to keep plugging away. It is just a case of getting the right people into the right place at the right time, which will come as they play together more.”

Gray was angry with the way his side played during the first half of their Bank Holiday Monday defeat away at Weston-super-Mare, which ended an unbeaten run of four games.

“You cannot expect to go anywhere, play like we did for 45 minutes and win the game,” he said. “It’s no good getting up for games against the likes of Farnborough and then coming somewhere like this and not showing the same desire.”

Gray will be looking for a dramatic improvement on Saturday, when high-flying Braintree visit the Camrose (kick-off 3pm). The Essex side are second in the table and unbeaten so far this season.

Saturday is Non-League Football Day, with supporters of Premier League and Football League clubs being offered half-price entry to the Camrose.

Football fans who produce a season ticket or used ticket stub from a professional club will be eligible for the discount, with adults paying £5, concessions £3 and children £1. The tickets must be from the 2010/11 season.
