DELANO Sam-Yorke has set his sights on 25 league goals next season after signing for Basingstoke Town.
The 25-year-old found the net 10 times in 25 appearances during two loan spells from AFC Wimbledon last term and is looking to improve his scoring record after putting pen to paper on a one-year deal at The Camrose.
“I’m aiming for 25 goals in the league next season,” Sam-Yorke said. “I’m looking to improve my game technically and just want to be a bigger, faster, stronger player.”
The former Woking striker chose Basingstoke ahead of several other clubs after being released by AFC Wimbledon and has high hopes for the 2011/12 Blue Square South campaign.
“I am looking forward to the new season and am excited,” he added. “I had a few options but I just wanted to play and I know I will get games here. The fact that I know everybody is also a plus.
“I have got confidence in the manager and I think we will do well. The play-offs are the aim and, with just a couple more players, we should have a squad capable of doing that.”
Town assistant manager Gerry Murphy is delighted with the signing of Sam-Yorke and expects more new players to follow suit in the coming weeks.
“It has taken us a while to tie things up but we are really pleased to have signed Delano,” Murphy said. “We beat a couple of other clubs who were interested to his signature and he is a real talent. He will score goals at this level and will play higher in his career.
“We are still talking to four or five other players and are hoping to tie up three or four in the next week to 10 days, as well as a couple of season-long loans from league clubs.”
The arrival of Sam-Yorke takes the number of players committed to Town for next season to 11.
Murphy revealed that a left-back is one of the players Town are hoping to secure on a season-long loan, while they also have their eye on a similar deal for a central midfielder. Basingstoke are also looking to bring in another body in that area, with their top target a player who spent last season at another Blue Square South club.
The club are also keen to sign a third striker and, while their chances of bringing Tim Sills back to the club seem to be fading, they have not completely given up hope.
