From period dramas, comedies and thrillers to documentaries, reality TV and news features, Hampshire has been host to many Hampshire has been home to many Hollywood movies and popular OTT series.

It was not a surprise when Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas were in Basingstoke last week for the filming of a new action spy series for Amazon Prime.

With historic dockyards, airstrips and castles, there is an abundance of great filming locations in Hampshire.

Following are the 34 major movies and TV programmes to be filmed in Hampshire.

1. The Crown

Charles and Diana’s wedding and Lord Mountbatten’s funeral from the Netflix’s series The Crown were filmed at the Winchester Cathedral. While the cathedral was transformed into St Paul’s Cathedral for the wedding, it was made to look like Westminster Abbey for the funeral.

Other Hampshire locations have also appeared in The Crown including Rhinefield House which portrayed one of the royal residences on the Balmoral estate and Somerley House which acted as a stand in for the royal couple's country estate, Highgrove.

2. Gladiator

Parts of one of the most popular movies ever, Gladiator, was filmed in and around Hampshire. Russell Crowe has also explored the depths of Alice Holt Forest for the movie, while the opening bloody battle scene was filmed at Bourne Wood, near Hampshire.

3. Downton Abbey

Another popular period drama, Downton Abbey, was also filmed in Hampshire at the Highclere Castle estate to the north of the county. This is used as the residence of the Granthams.

4. The Da Vinci Code

If the Winchester Cathedral was St Paul’s Cathedral and Westminster Abbey for The Crown, it was transformed into the Vatican in 2006 American mystery thriller The Da Vinci Code. The cathedral was paid a reported £20,000 to allow The Da Vinci Code to be filmed in the historic building.

5. 24: Live Another Day

Hampshire was the home for one of the important scenes in 2014 action series 24: Live Another Day. The scenes of the Chinese aircraft carrier The Shenyang being sunk was filmed with a 50ft miniature vessel in the water tank of Black Hangar Studios at Lasham Airfield in Alton, Hampshire.

6. The Edge of Tomorrow

Tom Cruise shot scenes for his film The Edge of Tomorrow at Barton Stacey in Test Valley. The Hollywood actor and his co-star Emily Blunt shot scenes for the alien combat movie at the former army base in Barton Stacey, near Andover. They set up camp for two and a half weeks in November and December 2012.

7. Top Gear

The trio of Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuiness and Chris Harris have shot an episode of Top Gear at Basingstoke County Hotel on London Road in 2019. The segment was about cheap convertible cars.

8. Diamonds are Forever

Hampshire has been a favourite location for several James Bond movies, with Diamonds are Forever being one of the most important spy movies to be filmed here. The finale of the 1971  movie was filmed in Southampton Docks with a murder attempt onboard the ship the Canberra. A total of four James Bond films have been shot at various locations including RAF Odiham, Hawley Woods in Farnborough and Eelmoor tank driving range in Aldershot.

9. Inception

Parts of the 2010 Christopher Nolan film Inception were filmed at Farnborough Airport.

Besides these, the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow has also announced recently that it is coming to Hampshire this summer and they are looking for members of the public to appear on the show.
