WOW. If you are looking for a way to entertain the kids, Circus Extreme has arrived in Hampshire and it’s packed with mind-blowing stunts that are sure to amaze you and your children.
The show takes place in a traditional big top, Europe’s largest touring big top in fact, and it’s clear that everyone here pitches in. It’s a big team effort to put on such a spectacular show.
Inside the marquee, as well as the usual ring and theatre-style seats with plenty of leg room, are also several food and drink stalls, selling popcorn, candy floss, hot dogs, drinks and more.
We were invited to see the show on Thursday, April 4 and despite it being windy and rainy outside, once inside, we felt comfortable and safe. The big top is also climate controlled, so despite the British weather doing its best to put a dampener on things, we were warm too.
The show opened with a dance and drums, followed by a huge rotating wheel, with two guys doing all kinds of stunts, skipping and jumping at height. A few times, one looked like he could lose his footing, bringing gasps from the crowd as he confidently carried on, but setting the tone for the whole show – prepare to have your heart in your mouth.
The show veered from beautifully choreographed gymnastics, to dance and song, merging modern and contemporary styles with stunts. A particularly moving performance, sees one gymnast fly through the air on a hoop and then turn into an almost mermaid, with an unexpected tank of water. If that wasn’t enough, it then caught fire.
Our favourite was Henry the Clown whose clever comic timing made the whole thing fun for everyone. Audience participation and his own slapstick sets brought laughter, and we especially enjoyed when he transformed into an expert high wire walker.
We were on the edges of our seats throughout the whole show. The wheel of death was simply jaw dropping; with the bikes' roar, smell and danger, it was a treat for the senses. In fact, the whole show was an unbelievable and inspiring display of what humans are capable of.
The show was rounded off with a freestyle motocross stunt. Riders flew through the air, perfectly rounding off a wonderfully bizarre and exceptionally brilliant two hours.
This really is an event with something for everyone - petrolheads, theatre-goers, thrillseekers, kids or grandparents, everyone will be sure to find something to entertain.
Circus Extreme is on Southsea Common, in Duisberg Way, until Sunday, April 21.
Most days have two shows, with some hosting three.
Tickets cost £26 for adults for grandstand, £22 for children, with cheaper seats available with a side view - £18 adults and £16 children.
VIP ringside tickets cost £32 adults and £28 children. Rear seats with a restricted view are £11 adults, and £9 children.
