JANE Austen’s House Museum in Chawton is in need of volunteers to act as house stewards at weekends.
Volunteers welcome visitors to the house and help direct them around the site as well as overseeing hands on activities and answering questions about the history of the house and the museum collection.
House Stewards do not need a comprehensive knowledge of Jane Austen and her work though an interest in the author is very valuable. Training is given on all aspects of the role and volunteers have the opportunity to share their knowledge with fellow stewards at regular meetings.
Volunteers can take on a full day or half day shift. Availability to undertake a commitment of at least one shift a month is required.
Mary Guyatt, curator, said: “Following our celebrations last year of the 200th anniversary of Pride & Prejudice and also the arrival of Jane Austen’s ring at the Museum we have had an increased number of visitors and need additional stewards at weekends when we are particularly busy.”
Janet Johnstone, volunteer manager said: “Our aim is always to give all of our visitors a memorable experience of visiting Jane Austen’s home. A friendly face as you come through the front door always makes our visitors feel welcome.”
Anyone interested, should email Janet Johnstone initially on janet.johnstone@jane-austens-house-museum.org.uk or call 01420 83262.
