Ruby Meeks was the head of Monk Sherborne Primary School, when I was there as a student: 1983 - 1989. She always had a huge passion for the arts and encouraged us to be so creative and imaginative. What a joy! I absolutely loved going to school when she was there.

As small children, I think we remember the kindness of people, especially adults, how we felt around them. Mrs Meeks was kind and I felt safe around her. She spoke to us children respectfully, responsibly and kindly. If she needed to have a word with you, she did, but it never felt like she was talking down to you.

I remember so clearly, one time, when I run past her a bit rudely, she said ‘Nerys! Do you do that at home?!‘ I replied literally, as a child does, ‘Yes‘, and she said, ‘Oh’ and looked very thoughtful for moment and then just politely asked me to not do that again. There was no blame, just thoughtfulness, curiosity, education and guidance. She spoke softly so you didn’t feel judged. You could tell her the truth.

I am a teacher now and I only hope I instil the same feeling of safety and non judgment with my students. Ruby Meeks truly had the education of the whole child at heart and I feel this ran through the whole school, when she was the head.

She always wore these wonderful brightly coloured tights which, at 5 years old, I thought were totally amazing! One day her legs would be green and then yellow or red the next. Yet, I remember how smart she was with these amazingly chic two-piece suits! I know we are not to comment on women’s appearances, so much, but Mrs Meeks had such style!

Mrs Meeks, thank you for your kindness and your care when I was a child. We loved you so much! May you rest in peace after all that hard work.

You helped form happy school memories in my mind and I am just one person. You must have touched so many young minds with your kindness and humanity.
My thoughts are with the family.
With all my love,
Nerys Joseph
