Sir.–With regard to the much reported danger faced by drivers and bikers on the A339 Alton Road.
I've been using it for more than 40 years. The first 15 years were on a motorbike in all weathers. High speeds were common, as they are now. What I was always conscious of was not the coming off the bike but what I would hit.
I believe that road is a mess of metal “road safety” signs. Everywhere you look, every corner has chevron signs etc, all on metal posts guaranteed to do maximum damage to bikers and car drivers alike. The authorities have gone mad with signs.
Get rid of the killer posts or at least replace them with plastic or rubber. Then if we do make a mistake, we'll have a better chance of surviving.
