A PROMINENT Basingstoke town centre building looks set to be converted into flats.
The trustees of Lamron Estates Pension Scheme want to turn the Top of The Town building, which stands on the corner of Winchester Street and New Road, into seven flats.
The ground floor would change from office space into a restaurant or a café. It is currently occupied by Countrywide Residential Lettings and In-toto Kitchens.
The application to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council states that the upper floors of the building would be converted to three one-bedroom flats and four studio flats. A makeover of the building’s 1960s exterior is also planned.
A statement in the application says: “There is significant over-supply of office space, more attractive than the application building, on the market in Basing-stoke, and there are also various unimplemented consents for new office buildings.
“The proposal to re-use a significant yet somewhat dated office building in appropriate alternative uses is to be supported.”
The application states there is already permission to convert the upper floors of the building into nine flats.
The borough council aims to decide on the application by February 5.
