Sir.–I am writing because I have not had an answer from the borough council. I wrote to them some months ago asking if there was any scheme to improve the junction at Wellington Terrace and Roman Road.
This has to be one of the most hazardous junctions in Basingstoke, especially when emerging from Wellington Terrace, whether turning left or right, especially at peak times.
Now that it’s darker earlier, when turning right, cars are speeding from the roundabout, making it dangerous to try to turn right, plus a driver’s view is obstructed when looking left by a tall hedge that practically finishes at the kerb’s edge. Also, when turning left, a driver has to be aware of the speeding vehicles from the roundabout.
Perhaps a council team of traffic experts can monitor the junction (especially during rush-hour times) and improve the junction – especially if all those houses are to be built on Manydown fields.
Maybe a solution would be to install traffic lights, or stop traffic turning right from Wellington Terrace. This junction has already had fatalities and casualties over the years. Let’s hope there are no more before the borough council or county council act.
