A SPECTACULAR show of light, colour and noise filled the night sky on Sunday, November 5, as the Mayor's Firework Fiesta event entertained thousands of people in Basingstoke.

Spectators of all ages braved the cold autumn temperatures to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night at one of the borough's main community events of the year.

A funfair and stalls and the 2-TEN FM radio station crew kept the crowds entertained while they waited for the main attraction.

People packed into the park to watch the impressive firework display, which took place with a rock and pop musical backdrop.

The annual event, which was supported by Gazette Newspapers, 2-TEN FM and Basing-stoke and Deane Borough Council, was organised to raise money for the Mayor's Charity Appeal and ICE, a local charity that supports disabled children.

Speaking after the event, borough mayor Councillor Tony Jones said: "It was great to see such a large crowd coming along to this family event to enjoy a breath-taking fireworks display.

"Not only did all those attending the event have a good time, they also helped to raise funds for the Salvation Army community centre kitchen, upgrading facilities for Hospital Radio Basingstoke and much-needed equipment for children with special needs at two local schools.

"I'd like to thank all those volunteers who gave up their time to make this event such a success. We couldn't do it without their dedication."
