Sir.–During the recent arctic conditions, the gritters have done an excellent job on the roads in Basingstoke. I have not experienced any problems.

Unfortunately, using the footpaths and watching others doing the same, is like watching the worst episode of Dancing On Ice. Only yesterday, I inadvertently performed a “Triple Salko” much to the amusement of other passers by!

Perhaps the “powers that be” could get all the people on community service to carry out their punishment by gritting as many pavements as possible. I hope this does not upset any Guardian readers! –Richard Chivers, Lower Brook Street, Basingstoke.

Sir.–I would like to thank Toyota garage in Basingstoke for offering assistance to patients in the hospital who needed to get home when the snowy conditions caused difficulties. My dad was one of those patients as my mum was unable to drive due to the snow.

My dad was so grateful and said how helpful the driver was. It certainly meant a lot to us as a family, many of whom, including myself live a long way away and were unable to help.

It is so nice to hear of someone going out of their way to help others and I would personally like to thank Toyota garage for their kindness. –Debbie Devereux-Roberts, Wirral, Merseyside.

Sir.–How many people in Basingstoke dreaded the snow forecast last Friday?

Memories of the gridlocked Ring Road three years ago and skidding on ice struck fear into many motorists.

What a relief to find the Ring Road cleared within hours and many minor roads and car parks easy to access.

Many thanks to all those who worked hard to clear the roads so efficiently this time. –Liz Williams, Address supplied.
