A PLAN has been put forward to change an Old Basing stream in the hope of attracting more wildlife.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Trust wants to improve the quality of a stream that runs through the Mill Field, between Bartons Lane and Pyotts Hill, by reducing its concrete base.

The £26,000 project would see bends and ponds created in the stream that will provide the shelter for slow-moving water for fish and insects.

The trust submitted the plan to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council after holding a consultation with Old Basing villagers last year.

At the time, Amanda Ingham, land advice project manager for the trust, told The Gazette: “The stream is completely lined with concrete so it does not currently attract a lot of wildlife.

“We are hoping that by creating lots of meanders, it will improve the area and attracts insects like the dragonfly and the damselfly.”

Reeds will be planted by the new banks of the stream to provide stability and a nearby path will be improved. The borough council aims to give its verdict on the plans by March 20.
