A CARE home for people with learning disabilities and mental health disorders could be created in Baughurst, if planning permission is granted by the borough council.

The Reading-based Choice Care Group has submitted a planning application for change of use for the property known as Red Roof, in Pinks Lane, which lies adjacent to their existing care home Fair View.

The property, which is currently a residential dwelling, would be operated as a residential care home for up to eight residents with learning disabilities and mental health disorders.

If the application is approved it would provide a home for six residents in a main house with six en-suite bedrooms, a lounge, dining room, kitchenette and laundry.

A further two residents would be housed in an annexe building, comprising two en-suite bedrooms with a small lounge and kitchenette.

Residents at the facility would be cared for by a team of full-time members of staff, working round the clock to provide care, though none would live in the property.

It is anticipated the care home will employ 13 full-time staff.

The planning application states: “Choice Care Group has a very strong management regime to ensure that the home integrates into the local community and its environment with minimal fuss.

“The home will be continuously staffed and this ensures that no residents will be left alone either inside the building or within the garden... all staff are fully trained to professionally and effectively manage any situations that are likely to result in increased noise or disturbance.”

The property lies within the inner zone, between 0-3 km, of the area around AWE Aldermaston, as stipulated by the Health and Safety Executive. However, as the current residential property can house six people, the company is arguing the proposals are “insignificant in comparison with the increase in population envisaged by the construction of new homes, which the HSE are seeking to avoid.”

Tadley Town Council’s highways and planning committee is set to discuss the planning application at its next meeting which is on Monday, January 28.

The borough council is then expected to make a decision on the application, which is still in a consultation period, by February 18.
