FAULTY intruder alarms have led to a surge in complaints from annoyed neighbours.
Today, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council issued a four-point checklist for people who own an intruder alarm.
Council Cabinet member for the environment, Cllr Robert Donnell, said the measures would help curb future noise complaints.
According the council, alarm owners should: · Ensure the alarm is properly fitted with sensors in appropriate places. If you fit it yourself, follow the manufacturer's guidelines.
- Make sure you, members of your family or staff, and key holders know how to switch off the alarm, and any backup device.
- Ensure the alarm is fitted with a cut-out device that will silence the alarm bell after a maximum of 20 minutes.
- Notify the council and police of at least two key-holders able to attend if called at any time. Or, if you employ a key-holder service company you can give their details.
Cllr Donnell said: “While many people use alarms to deter burglars and trespassers, when these alarms sound unnecessarily they can cause a real nuisance to neighbours.
“By taking these simple steps and also registering key holder details with the council and police we are trying to help residents and also reduce the number of noise complaints we receive.”
