"A GREAT day for Basingstoke Town Football Club and a great day for Basingstoke."
Those were the words of club president Rafi Razzak after he and 400-plus dedicated Basingstoke football fans had witnessed one of the greatest moments in the 110-year history of Basingstoke Town FC.
Against all the odds, Basingstoke's valiant players beat League One side Chesterfield 1-0 in the first round of the FA Cup.
Matt Warner was the goal-scoring hero whose first-half strike sealed a famous victory against a side who have this season already beaten Premiership teams Manchester City and West Ham in the Carling Cup.
Mr Razzak, who is chairman of main club sponsor Centerprise International, paid tribute both to the players for a magnificent team effort and to the hundreds of Basingstoke fans who travelled to Chesterfield.
"Our players and our fans were superb," he said. "Our supporters were outnumbered by the home fans, but they made much more noise than the Chesterfield supporters and cheered the team from start to finish.
"This is a marvellous victory for everyone involved with Basingstoke Town FC, and I hope that this will encourage even more people to come along and support the team."
