SCOUT leaders from across Basingstoke were honoured for their outstanding service to the movement at a poignant ceremony.
The event for members of the Basingstoke East Scout District also marked the retirement of Bob Lock, district commissioner, who has dedicated 40 years to Scouting in the district.
Beryl Mullender, district secretary, said: "His Mr Lock service to Scouting in Basingstoke is unique and it is appropriate for him to receive public acknowledgement of the service and commitment given to young people in the borough of Basingstoke and Deane."
One of Mr Lock's final duties was to present six medals of merit to Scouting staff who have demonstrated a wider commitment to Scouting in Hampshire, beyond their specified duties.
The recipients were:
- David Wickens, district chairman
- Carol Mann, district treasurer
- John Talks, district Scout leader and Scout leader of 1st Popley Everest Scout Group
- Steve Wood, Cub Scout leader of 1st Chineham Scout Group
- Helen Wood, assistant Cub Scout leader of 1st Chineham Scout Group
- Sue Surplice, Cub Scout leader of Old Basing Scout Group
Mrs Mullender said: "It is seldom that six such prestigious awards are made within the same district at any one time, and it is a sign of the strength of Scouting in Basingstoke today."
Mr Lock's service to Scouting was also recognised by a presentation made by his successor Andy Cullen.
