HAMPSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning to residents to check their smoke alarms as winter approaches.
Chimney and thatch fires increase at this time of the year, and the use of candles and overloaded electricity sockets also pose a threat.
Clyde Evans, of the community safety department, said: "With winter approaching, it also brings the time for many family celebrations. It is at this time of year that the fire risk increases in the home with people using more electricity and possibly overloading plug sockets. People also tend to use more candles and will soon start putting up decorations.
"All households should have at least one smoke alarm on every level of their property and now is a good time to ensure they work effectively."
HFRS has issued the following safety advice:
- Fit a smoke detector on every level of the property.
- Check the batteries once a week.
- Never remove the battery from your detector - even for a short time.
- Do not put smoke alarms up in bathrooms or kitchens as steam can activate them.
- If the alarm sounds, get out and call 999.
