THE end of one chapter and the start of another - that's what is happening at a popular Basingstoke church over the span of seven days.
On Sunday, November 26, the Holy Ghost Church held its final Mass - just one week before the congregation takes part in its first Mass at a new church in Popley.
The move marks the end of more than 100 years of the Sunday service being held at the Sherborne Road church, and the end of the era was marked by three traditional services of Mass.
Minne Greayer, fundraising co-ordinator for Holy Ghost, said: "Because of the history, a lot of people are sad at the thought of the move, but everybody who has seen the new church thinks it's beautiful. It is very simple, with a submerged tiled font and grey slate."
Weddings, funerals and special services will still be held at the Holy Ghost, which was established in 1903, but regular services will now be held at St Bede's - the brand-new church in Popley Way.
St Bede's will bring together congregations from across Basingstoke, including more than 220 people from the Holy Ghost, which had a congregation that was growing too large for the church to house.
Monsignor Vincent Harvey, who will be moving next door to the new Popley church, said: "I'm feeling nervous and excited about the move.
"Congregations from across the borough will come to St Bede's, so the move is bringing the community together. The new church is simple and classical - completely different."
The dedication of St Bede's Church is due to take place in May 2007.
