JUSTICE has been done - that's the verdict from shooting victim Leon Reynolds after two men found guilty of his attempted murder have been caged for a combined total of at least 25 years.
Mr Reynolds, who lives in Popley, Basingstoke, was left with a life-threatening gunshot wound to his abdomen after violence erupted in a Basingstoke bar almost a year ago.
The 26-year-old's friend Ben Vine was slashed across the face and has been left permanently disfigured by the violent attack which happened at a special r 'n' b and garage night at the Bang Bar in Basing View in December 2005.
Last week, Jermaine Tyrer, 26, and Simon Brooker, 20, were each handed an indeterminate jail sentence for public protection by a judge, who described their behaviour as aggressive and vicious.
The pair were found guilty of attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of Class A drugs, by a jury at Winchester Crown Court in September.
Jurors were told that Tyrer, of Kinson Road, Tilehurst, Reading, was seen lifting his shirt to reveal a silver handgun, and Brooker, of Kentwood Close, Tilehurst, was heard to rap: "Every time I'm stepping in this place, 9mm by my waist, bass, gunshots, lick, murder case."
The jurors took a total of 14 hours, spread over four days, to find both Tyrer and Brooker guilty of all charges.
Following this week's sentencing hearing, Mr Reynolds told The Gazette: "Both Ben and I have had justice now. They Tyrer and Brooker got long sentences because of the way they acted that night and the way they acted in court."
Anthony Berry QC, representing Tyrer, said he accepted that his client could be considered dangerous because of his previous convictions - which include robbery and grievous bodily harm. But he added that these offences were committed a long time ago and that apart from this offence, Tyrer had "matured" over the past couple of years.
Gordon Bebb QC, defending Brooker, told the court that his client was a suicide risk and said that although a jury had found both defendants guilty under the laws of joint enterprise, there was still the question of who fired the gun and who was there as back-up. "It was not actually my client who shot the gun," he said.
Mr Bebb confirmed that Brooker has previous convictions for motoring offences, minor drugs offences and common assault.
In jailing Tyrer for a minimum of 14 years and Brooker for a minimum of 11 years, Judge David Griffiths said that both defendants posed a significant risk to the public.
He said: "You showed a callous disregard for the lives of the people in that bar and neither of you showed any remorse for what you did that night."
The judge also said he had taken into account the pair's aggressive and arrogant manner in the dock in handing out the lengthy sentences.
"To me it is clear that this sort of conduct is simply intolerable. I take the view that this is a grave case of attempted murder."
After sentence was pronounced, Tyrer, dressed in a black shirt and trousers, shrugged his shoulders and smiled as he was taken out of the dock. Brooker, who wore a dark suit and rosary beads, showed no emotion.
Giving the police reaction, Detective Inspector Dave Crouch, of the major crime department, said: "Crimes like this are very rare in Hampshire and particularly in Basingstoke.
"I am very pleased with the sentences and hope it will deter any young men who carry firearms from bringing them into Hampshire."
