A BUILDER in Basingstoke has shown his support for UKIP ahead of this month’s borough elections – by painting the party’s name on a roof in Dummer.
UKIP supporter and self-employed builder Cliff Taylor is repairing the roof of the property in Down Street.
And the 50-year-old father- of-two, who lives in Alexandra Road, Overton, took the unusual step of showing his support for UKIP by painting the party’s name on the roof.
He told The Gazette: “I support UKIP, and I know the customer well enough to know he wouldn’t worry about it. It is not permanent, and it will be covered in a couple of weeks.
“If it was my roof, I would have been more than happy to do that. It is just a show of support in what I would consider a Tory part of the borough.”
But a leading councillor in the village did not appreciate the artwork and has called Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council to report the “graffiti”.
Dummer Parish Council chairman Councillor Julian Jones said: “The owner of the property didn’t do it so as far as I am concerned, it is graffiti. If one person starts writing stuff like that on roofs, we are frightened that others will.”
