THE much-loved York Nativity Play is set to be held for the 58th year in Aldermaston – and it will be held in honour of its founder and director Pat Eastop.
Mrs Eastop, MBE, began staging the tradi-tional nativity play in 1957 and continued to direct it every year.
She passed away in September at the age of 85 after a short illness – but the play will continue in her honour.
Councillor Dave Shirt, chairman of Alder-maston Parish Council, said: “She will be sadly missed by all in our community. Having directed every performance of the Nativity Play for the last 57 years, she had already appointed Chris Boott to shadow her role this year, and he has agreed to now become the new director, so this unique and important tradition will continue.
“This year's performances, however, will be tinged with sadness at the loss of such a remarkable woman.”
Mrs Eastop, who lived in Ecchinswell, was made an MBE in 1998 for her work around the nativity play.
Generations of families have taken part in the popular play. Leslie Woodley has played the part of third shepherd for 50 years, having taken over the role from his father, Charley.
The play, performed in St Mary the Virgin Church, is a highlight of the village calendar.
It will be performed from 8pm on Thurs-day, December 4, Friday, December 5, Saturday, December 6, and Sunday, December 7. There is also a dress rehearsal/ performance on Monday, December 1, at 8pm.
