JEAN Maton is one of Basingstoke’s top sportswomen, having won many titles at the annual Sports Awards held in the town.
She is a world-class veteran powerlifter, taking part in the 50-plus category.
She has won six world championships.
Last year she won a quartet of gold medals at the World Masters Powerlifing Championships, held in the Czech Republic.
This year marks 30 years of powerlifting for Jean. Her first competition was in 1985.
She is also a member of the Basingstoke Powerlifting Club based at Queen Mary’s College, in Cliddesden Road, Basingstoke.
Jean works as a corporate support officer at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.
1. Who was your childhood hero and why? It was a long time ago – can’t remember whether I had one or not!
2. What is your most precious possession and why is it important to you? No particular possession is important to me, but my husband Phil is important to me.
3. What was the first record/ CD you bought? Three Steps to Heaven by Showaddywaddy – on seven-inch vinyl (I’m now showing my age!)
4. What is the radio or television show you hate to miss? Eastenders and Holby City.
5. What is your favourite film? Shawshank Redemption.
6. What is your pet hate? Bad manners and bad driving.
7. What are you reading at the moment? Apart from the last day or so’s newspapers I have just finished David Jason’s autobiography My Life and I’m just about to start reading Guy Martin’s autobiography My Autobiography.
8. If you were choosing a last meal, what would it be? Anything involving chicken plus profiteroles and ice cream for pudding!
9. If you could meet anyone from history, who would it be? There are probably lots of people I would like to meet from history, I couldn’t pick just one. They include Elvis, Brunel, Mike Hailwood, Neil Armstrong, Queen Elizabeth I and Nelson Mandela.
10. If you had a time machine where would it take you? Into the future to see what life has in store for me.
11. If you were stranded on a desert island, what luxury would you choose to have with you? An MP3 player/radio.
12. What sports team do you support? Apart from GB Powerlifting, for rugby – Basingstoke, Bath and England and in football – Southampton.
13. What was your first job? Cleaner of the Job Centre.
14. If you could take over someone’s job for the day, whose job would you choose? An astronaut.
15. What worries you the most? That I worry too much about everything!
16. What is your proudest moment? Winning my gold medals at the World Championships.
17. What would you like your epitaph to be? It was good while it lasted.
18. What’s your guilty pleasure? Chocolate and dry white wine.
19. What one thing could change society for the better? Love.
20. What three words best describe you? Happy, caring and considerate.
