AN OVERTON man has completed his 14th long-distance run, raising thousands of pounds for a disability charity in the process.
Jamie Jones, 45, has run 14 of the Simplyhealth Great Runs in 2017 for Hampshire-based disability charity Revitalise, running distances from 5km up to a full half-marathon for some of the events.
So far, the total for Jamie’s fundraising work stands at £3,610.
Jamie’s challenge started with the Simplyhealth Great Edinburgh Run in January and culminated in the Simplyhealth Great South Run in Portsmouth on October 22 at which, in tribute to the historic venue, Jamie and some of his fellow runners dressed up as Lord Horatio Nelson.
Jamie works as head of IT customer service for Simplyhealth at its Andover headquarters.
After completing his final run, Jamie said: “It was a pleasure and a privilege to run for Revitalise this year. Running past HMS Victory dressed as Nelson in my final race, the Simplyhealth Great South Run, felt like a victory for me too.
“But I think my fondest memory will be the Simplyhealth Great Manchester Run, which took place just days after the horrific bombing there. The atmosphere of togetherness and resilience is something I’ll never forget.
“And to do it all for a great charity like Revitalise was just the icing on the cake.”
Revitalise operates the Netley Waterside House centre in Southampton. The centre, which is next to Netley Abbey, provides respite holidays for disabled people and carers from the region and the UK.
Jamie’s next challenge will be the Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa on November 26, which is only over the relatively modest distance of 10km but will be taking place at an altitude of 8,000 feet, adding an additional layer to the challenge.
