A CELEBRATION and an inaugural race marked an enjoyable weekend for a society.
On Sunday, Basingstoke Canal Society helped to stage the first ever Odiham raft race with seven teams competing over a course that started at the North Warnborough lift bridge and ended next to Galleon Marine’s base at Colt Hill, some 2km.
The fastest time of just over half an hour was set by the Basingstoke Canal Authority team.
The second fastest time of 47 minutes, was logged by a team called In Deep Ship, just beating BAD Idea, the Basingstoke and Deane Canoe Club entry
There was a short race for children’s teams, with BAD Idea doing well again.
A trophy for the winners and medals all round were presented by Air Chief Marshall Sir Joe French, one time commanding officer of RAF Odiham.
Meanwhile on Friday, around 150 people came to Mytchett, Surrey, to enjoy a volunteer barbecue laid on by the Canal Authority and Canal Society.
