A PROPOSED extension to Basingstoke hospital could see the relocation of its fracture clinic.
An application submitted to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council outlines a bid to build a one-storey extension adjacent to the current Orthopaedic Unit at the Aldermaston Road hospital.
If given the green light, the work would also see the relocation of disabled parking bays to a more ‘sensible position’.
A planning design statement read: “The scheme is for a single-storey infill extension adjacent [to] the Orthopaedic Unit.
“This will allow the relocation of the Fracture Clinic to a sensible position for patient care which is also adjacent Accident and Emergency.”
The statement adds: “This scheme will not increase patient numbers but will enable the relocation of the Fracture Unit to improve the speed and quality of service delivered.
“There will be no change to patient demographics but vast improvement to Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital regarding organisation and ultimately to the patient.
“The extension will create examination/consultation rooms, together with a new reception area, waiting places and relocated plaster room and will streamline the fracture clinic for the benefit of all volunteers, providers and users.”
The concept of the scheme is to create a low-level single storey structure to match the scale of the existing structures surrounding the external courtyard.
The planning design statement adds: “The design will result in the relocation of one disabled car space from this area to the main car parking level as indicated on the block plan.
“External paving will be adjusted to create a walkway from the car parking stairwell to the main entrance to the hospital.
“A sympathetic design has been proposed in a modern architectural style similar to the extension surrounds.
“The design enables the construction of a high quality scheme which will enhance facilities at the hospital.”
Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital and is the applicant on the proposal, said that the plans would improve the ‘functionality’ and ‘care provided’ by the hospital.
