After gaining a large majority overnight, Boris Johnson has spoken in front of 10 Downing Street about his aims for a new parliament.

Shortly before 11am, the leader of the Conservatives went to Buckingham Palace to officially ask the Queen to form a new government.

He was delayed by the changing of the guard ceremony, but then returned to Downing Street.

Just after 3pm, he spoke for five minutes about his plans for the new government.

"This morning I went to Buckingham Palace, and I am forming a new government, and on Monday MPs will arrive at Wesminster to form a new parliament.

"I am proud to say members of our government will set out from constituencies that have never returned a Conservative MP for 100 years.

"We have been given a mandate to get Brexit done before January 31.


 

"To all those who might have voted for us for the first time, who might have heard the voices of their parents as they looked at their ballot, I say thank you for the trust you have placed in us and in me, and we will work around the clock to repay your trust.

"To those who did not vote for us, and who might still want to remain in the EU, I say we will never ignore your good and positive feelings toward the other nations of Europe.

"Now is the moment as we leave the EU to let those natural feelings find expression and build a new partnership.

"I urge everyone on either side of an increasingly arid argument to find closure, and to let the healing begin.

"I know the overwhelming priority of people across the country is to focus on the NHS, as well as infrastructure and education.

"After five weeks of electioneering, this country deserves a break from politics and talking about Brexit, I want everyone to go about their Christmas knowing we will make 2020 a year of prosperity, growth and hope, with a parliament that works for you."
