THE FINAL phase of a major housing development near Basingstoke hospital is an improvement, but still needs more socially rented accommodation, according to one ward councillor.

As previously reported, Persimmon Homes are currently developing Merton Rise between Aldermaston Road and Chineham Lane in Popley.

The 784-house estate was finally given the go-ahead in 2013, with further details now being provided for phase 2C.

It will see 146 more houses put up between Kidlington Road and Don Allen Drive.

Of these, 24 will be affordable for rent (22 flats or maisonettes and two 2-bed houses), whilst a further 15 will be for affordable house ownership. Persimmon state that these final 39 affordable houses make up the total number of affordable homes first set by Basingstoke council.

However, according to Councillor Jane Frankum (Labour, Popley West), there is not enough socially rented accommodation.

"Each phase is getting better and better," she told the Gazette.

"These are better spaced out and more on-street parking.

"We need affordable housing, everyone agrees. I am talking about social renting."

She says that she has spoken to the council officer, who is looking at this in more detail.

Also included in the plans is a shared green space area, known as Popley Way square.

According to Laura Jackson, planning manager at Persimmon Homes Thames Valley: "The layout proposed for phase 2c has followed the principles that have been permitted on previous phases.

"It also looks to ensure that the aspirations of the illustrative masterplan are met.

"The internal road layout has been heavily determined by the levels that are on site and therefore is a robust technical solution that has reduced the need for retaining wall features."

Now, Basingstoke council will review the application, with a decision due in July.
