A SOUND ENGINEER who found himself out of work after the Covid-19 pandemic hit has launched a new awards ceremony for the hospitality industry.
Jay Dodds was touring the world as part of the crew behind the musical We Will Rock You earlier this year, but found that paused after the coronavirus pandemic closed theatres.
Out of work, Jay ventured to France to work on a wine qualification, which saw him discover a passion for food and drink.
He has now decided to launch the Universal Food Awards for hospitality businesses across Hampshire and Berkshire to enter to "celebrate all the good that this sector has to offer".
"We can all agree that 2020 was not the year we expected," Jay told The Gazette.
"The hospitality sector has suffered tremendously due to the Government lockdowns and restrictions like many other businesses.
"The Universal Food Awards has been launched to bring the hospitality industry together to celebrate all the good that this sector has to offer."
The awards, which launched earlier this month, is now open for eateries across the two counties to enter their establishments, and the public will be able to vote from January.
On top of this, one lucky voter will win a three night stay for two people at a 16th century chateaux in Belebat, France.
The winner will be announced at a virtual ceremony in April.
