A BASINGSTOKE singer has achieved international success, as he scooped his first MOBO award.
Samuel Nwachukwu - known as CalledOut Music - beat fellow nominees such as gospel grime artist, Guvna B and global sensation Kingdom Choir, that performed at the royal wedding, to secure the title of Best Gospel Act.
Hosted by Maya Jama and content creator Chunkz, the award ceremony that celebrates music of black origin returned to screens after a two-year-long hiatus, via YouTube live stream and later broadcasted on BBC One.
Former Queen Mary’s College student Samuel produces and writes his songs that are heavily influenced by his Christian faith – with one of his singles ‘My Prayer’ amassing over 4 million views on YouTube.
Since embarking on a professional music career four years ago, the 25-year-old also graduated from university with an Accounting degree while releasing multiple hits that topped UK Christian charts – becoming the only male artist with this achievement in the genre so far.
Making an official debut with a headline concert in 2018, he performed to an audience of over 1,000 in London. The ‘Homecoming Tour’ saw the artist perform tracks like the viral hit ‘Love Around’ to sold-out venues in cities such as Paris, Amsterdam and Johannesburg.
Having already picked up notable awards such as Premier Gospel’s ‘Best Male Artist’ and ‘Best Music Video’ in 2019 – a MOBO award will be the latest trophy to add to the list of expanding accolades.
Reacting to the announcement, Samuel said: “Honestly winning a MOBO is like a dream come true. I remember being a teenager and watching the MOBO’s on TV every year thinking that it would be so cool to be recognised, and now being the recipient of a MOBO myself is just mind-blowing.
"I’m really excited. It’s a testament of God’s grace and just all the hard work that has gone on with HFP music consistently creating content. I am so humbled by the support.”
He reminisced on the journey to this point as he tweeted: "Four years ago, my manager and I took a leap of faith and released my first single... Four years later, I've just won a MOBO Award. I’m beyond Humbled!"
