THE final stage of the Government’s road map is fast approaching, but doubt is beginning to be cast over June 21.

Some scientists have said that the final easing of social restrictions in England should be delayed, others have said that the cost to society will be too great if it is.

We have put together seven updates to keep you informed about coronavirus in the borough as we approach the so called “great unlocking”.

All the data below is correct as of Wednesday June 2.

Indian Variant

It has been confirmed that cases of the Indian Variant have been found in Basingstoke and Deane.

PHE data shows one positive case of the S-gene was identified in Basingstoke and Deane by May 25, from samples taken in the week to May 21.

The health body had not identified any cases before that point. The vast majority of areas in England have reported at least one case.

Cases

According to Public Health England figures, six confirmed cases were reported in the Basingstoke and Deane area yesterday (June 1). It brings the total number of infections in the borough since the start of the pandemic to 8,283.

The government’s interactive coronavirus map shows that Kingsclere and Heath End is the worst affected area and is classified as a hotspot with a rolling case rate of 55.1 cases per 100,000 people.

Tadley West and Woolton Hill, Burghclere and Bishops Green also showed up on the map as hotspot areas.

Basingstoke as a borough is currently just below the UK average for cases with a rolling rate of 11.3.

Deaths

Public Health England figures show that one person in the borough has sadly died from coronavirus in the last seven days. It brings the total number of deaths within 28 days of positive test in Basingstoke to 290.

Schools

Three schools have recorded positive cases in the latest 10 day period, Castle Hill, Aldworth and Costello.

New data shows that Hampshire pupils missed among the least face-to-face teaching in the autumn term after having to self-isolate or shield due to Covid-19, figures reveal.

Pupils across Hampshire missed the equivalent of 433,540 days of in-person education between September and December for this reason, Department for Education figures show.

That was an absence rate of 3.9 per cent – among the lowest in England – and equivalent to roughly three days per pupil.

Hospitalisations

As of last Tuesday (May 25), the Hampshire Hospitals Trust were caring for six coronavirus patients in hospital. The figures also show that four new Covid patients were admitted to hospital in Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the week to May 23. This was up from two in the previous seven days.

Vaccinations

Data shows that a total of 173,340 vaccines have been administered across Basingstoke and Deane. A total of 109,105 people have received a first dose as of, 31 May with a further 64,235 second doses administered.
