A NEW crash map has revealed that 122 car crashes on Black Dam roundabout have been reported to police in recent years.
The interactive online map created by the road safety experts, CrashMap, highlights the location of every collision on the roads in a given period.
The detailed tool reveals not only the severity of the crash – slight, serious or fatal – but also when it took place, the number of vehicles involved, and the number of casualties reported.
The data used is taken directly from official government statistics, which is based on records submitted to them by the police.
It comes as no surprise that Black Dam has had its fair share of crashes over the past 22 years.
A total of 122 crashes on the roundabout have been reported to the police in the years from 1999 to 2020, but the maps does not include data for 2021, meaning the actual figure is higher.
The majority of crashes reported have been "slight" but the numbers also include multiple serious crashes and one fatal crash.
This week four crashes took place on the roundabout over a 48-hour-period, leaving one driver with life changing injuries.
The council is now facing calls to redesign Black Dam roundabout.
Traffic lights were out at Basingstoke’s busiest junction, which links Ringway east (A339) and south (A30) to the M3 while connecting drivers to Old Basing, when two of the accidents occurred on Monday and Tuesday.
Now dozens of residents are asking Hampshire County Council, which is responsible for roads in the borough, to redesign the controversial roundabout.
Resident David Goodfellow said: “It is time to rethink the design of this stupid roundabout. God knows how many crashes happen and now someone has suffered life-changing injuries.”
Councillor Gavin James has called now for an investigation.
