HAMPSHIRE house hunters have a rare opportunity to purchase a property built inside a former prison.
If you want to own your own piece of local history with all the benefits of modern interior then purchasing a property for £215,000 inside the former HMP Kingston might be the ideal move for you.
The Old Portsmouth Gaol was built in 1877 and has had a varied history with the buildings being used both as a boy’s borstal and as a police station during World War II.
In 1965 capital punishment for murder was abolished and Kingston began exclusively holding inmates serving life sentences.
Kingston Prison became the only prison in England and Wales to have a unit exclusively for elderly male prisoners serving life sentences.
Some well known names served time inside the prison including EastEnders star Leslie Grntham, who played Den Watts.
HMP Kingston was also home to the M25 three; Raphael George Rowe, Michael George Davis and Randolph Egbert Johnson who were wrongly jailed for life for murder and burglary.
The Ministry of Justice sold the prison in 2014 after it was closed in 2013 to cut costs.
Now two bed two bath apartments inside the building are being advertised for sale for £215,000 on Zoopla.
The flats will boast contemporary kitchens with comprehensive floor and wall cupboards incorporating modern handle-less soft-close doors and drawers as well as appliances.
The bathrooms will include a vanity mirror, white sanitary ware, stylish mixer taps and showers and a have marble effect wall and floor tiles.
Inside the bedrooms you will find a neutral colour scheme with white painted woodwork giving it a light, bright and airy feel.
The former prison building is situated near Kingston Park and close to the railway station and ferry terminal.
The newly built apartments range from one to three bedrooms and come with allocated parking and a 10 year guarantee.
It is thought the build will be complete by autumn this year and a help to buy scheme is available.
