Fans in Basingstoke reacted with disappointment as England lost to Italy on penalties in the Euro 2020 final.
There was anticipation, excitement and hope at the start of the game, as families and friends gathered to cheer on The Three Lions.
Around 350 people packed into the outdoor areas at popular Barton’s Mill, Old Basing, to watch England's first final performance in 55 years.
And the crowd erupted in cheers when England scored the first goal within minutes of the game starting.
But the atmosphere became tense after Italy scored a goal in the second half.
With the nail-biting game ending with a penalty shootout, the crowd at Barton’s Mill ramped up their support for England.
There was joy and elation when England scored or Italy missed as fans kept up their hope to the very end.
But the 55-year wait to win a major trophy was crushed in the heart-breaking finish as they lost 3-2 on penalties against Italy at Wembley.
Our reporter at the scene commended the bar staff who handled the crowd with perfection.
Though it didn't stop one or two aggrieved punters from throwing their drinks. Though staff reacted quickly, with the perpetrators shown the door.
Hampshire Constabulary said the District Commander for Basingstoke wasn't aware of any football-related incidents of violence, or any hate-related hate crimes last night.
Chief Inspector Mark Lewis, who led Hampshire Constabulary’s response to policing the Euros, said: “Like most of the country we were disappointed with last night’s result, but I was pleased that the vast majority of Hampshire residents were able to watch the game and go about their business with no incident.
“We did have an increase in calls to us at the final whistle, including from licensed premises and within homes.
“However we had a robust plan in place and increased numbers of officers on duty which allowed us to cope with demand.
“Public safety has been our number one concern while policing the Euros, whether that is preventing street disorder, domestic abuse or hate crimes.
“I would like to thank the people of Hampshire for their support and hope this continues for the World Cup next year.”
