BASINGSTOKE firms have come together to inspire students to consider careers in science, technology and engineering.
Inspiring STEM Careers, a virtual event, saw more than 400 pupils from secondary schools across the Hampshire region learn about different career paths, post-education.
The event was supported by 10 businesses who delivered 24 fun-filled activities.
Students watched demonstrations and learnt how to make prototyping of a new product using 3D printing, by Procter and Gamble.
Pupils also took part in an escape room-themed challenge, tasked with catching a criminal, in an exercise organised by AWE Aldermaston.
The event was part-organised by Basingstoke Consortium and received backing from Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council, AWE, ThermoFisher Scientific, Fujitsu, Morgan Sindall and Thames Water.
Councillor Ken Rhatigan, leader of Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council, said: “We are very pleased to support this important event which aims to inspire the next generation to consider a career in science, technology, engineering and maths. The young people taking part will be provided with a unique opportunity to take part in a range of challenges, designed and delivered by local businesses."
“While there are many career options within STEM, companies often struggle to fill vacancies. Events such as this are crucial in addressing this gap and will help to ensure young people know about the many exciting opportunities available to them.”
A spokesman for Proctor & Gamble, who also supported the event, said: "Hopefully we've introduced a whole new group of students to a whole world of exciting STEM careers."
