A man accused of secretly filming and photographing a woman in Festival Place was 'spoken to' by police but not arrested, The Gazette can report.
As previously reported, a woman was browsing a stall with her boyfriend outside the Build a Bear shop when another shopper claims to have witnessed a man taking inappropriate photographs of her.
The 15-year-old boy approached the couple to alert them, who confronted the man.
According to their social media accounts, they made the man delete the photos, but claim to have found other inappropriate images of shoppers.
They called the police who attended the scene.
But after telling The Gazette that they had no record of the incident, Hampshire Constabulary have now said that police did attend, but did not arrest the man.
A spokesperson said: "We were called to Festival Place, Basingstoke, at 3.09pm on Saturday 31 July following reports of a man acting suspiciously in the shopping centre.
"A man was identified and spoken to by officers. No arrests were made."
Posting to Facebook at the weekend, the victim said that she found photos and videos of other shoppers when she confronted the man.
"We didn’t know what else to do so called the police because I felt so violated," her post reads. "I guess it’s in the police hands now on what happens to him."
The mother of the teenager who alerted the couple has also said she is "so proud" of her son for alerting the woman.
"He was waiting in Festival Place for his friend and noticed an older man stop and start taking pictures of a young woman.
"My son is super awkward when it comes to talking to people, but he knew what he had seen was wrong and gross so he watched a minute or so longer to make sure he was correct and went and informed the couple of what he had seen.
"The couple then confronted the man and made him remove the pictures from his phone.
"This is such a gross thing to have happened but I'm so proud that my son said something despite how socially awkward he is."
