TRIBUTES have been paid to a 'truly exceptional' man who sadly lost his life in the fatal crash on the A303 near Andover on Wednesday (August 25).

Avery Recovery, a breakdown and recovery service based in Southampton and Salisbury, announced on its social media channels that one of its employees had been involved in the incident.

The post read: "It is with utmost sadness that we confirm the tragic loss of a staff member whilst on duty yesterday.

"Tom was a highly valued colleague and friend and brought a smile and sunshine to everyone he met. He loved his job and helping people and was a truly exceptional person. It was an honour to have known him and have had him as part of the Avery family.

"Needless to say, the entire team are devastated but our immediate thoughts are with his wife and family and all those directly affected by the incident."

The company thanked its customers for its messages of support. 

"Thank you to so many of you who have already expressed your support – customers and industry partners alike – it truly is appreciated and means a lot," they said.

"Tom will be sorely missed but will always be remembered. Rest in Peace Tom."

Hundreds of people commented with their own messages of condolence. 

One wrote: "No one deserves this, it is so sad and tragic. My utmost condolences to you."

Another added: "Such sad news. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, the Avery team and the industry as a whole.

"Tragic reality that those who are working roadside are putting their lives at risk in the pursuit of helping others. True heros, everyday. Rest in peace Tom."

Emergency services were called just to the scene just after 8.40am to a report of a collision involving a Vauxhall Astra, a Mercedes food delivery van, a HGV and a DAF recovery truck.

Sadly, three people, all from separate vehicles, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Their families have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Senior Investigating officer DC Cate Paling said: "We are keen to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision, or the moments leading up to it, particularly anyone with dash cam footage.

"In the immediate moments after the collision, a small white car with a black roof passed the scene and we believe they may be an important witness who we wish to speak with.
