Protective fences have been put up to stop people climbing over sculptures of colourful pigs intended to bring joy to Basingstoke.

The Hampshire Hog trail, organised by Basingstoke Together, is a free event designed to get people exploring the town.

But vandals have already seen one hog taken away from its position in Eastrop Park after the sculpture was ripped off its plinth and thrown in the hedge.

Now organisers have taken practical steps to stop people from mistreating the artwork, with railings and a sign erected around the sculpture placed in The Malls, reading: "For your safety, please do not climb on the hog."

Hampshire Hogs is a specialist trail of 17 sculptures, designed by local artists. They will be auctioned off for charity in October. Visit destinationbasingstoke.co.uk to find out more.
