A VERY special lady celebrated reaching her milestone birthday in Basingstoke last week after being diagnosed with terminal cancer six years ago.
Louise Funnell celebrated turning 60 at Christ Church in Chineham last week on Wednesday, January 12 after she was diagnosed with the illness in 2016.
She has been supported throughout her journey by Basingstoke charity The Pink Place, who offer free well-being support and services to adults affected by cancer and their partners living in North Hampshire.

Louise, who is from Newbury, said was delighted with her celebrations.
She said: “Reaching my 60th birthday is a milestone that I didn’t think I’d make. Back in 2016 I got a terminal cancer diagnosis and never thought I’d see the day.
"It’s been great having cake and fizz and making memories with the Pink Place who have supported me with love and friendship along the way. I’ve likened my cancer experience to a game of chess.
“I’m winning at the moment as further chemo is keeping the cancer from spreading. I’d also like to thank the staff at the Rainbow Unit at NHS Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital who have provided excellent care and attention to see that I get through the chemo and side effects with ease. I raise a glass and hope that 2022 is a kind year to all of us.”
The celebration was attended by various people including members of the ladies support group, volunteers and Jacky Boots the chair of trustees, who all enjoyed pink fizz and a delicious celebratory cake made by Alicia Robinson, Secretary of the Newbury Sugarcraft Guild.
“We are honoured to have been included in Louise’s milestone 60th birthday celebrations and it was wonderful for our group to share her joyful celebration. She is a truly extraordinary and inspirational lady who always brings so much positivity and determination to our ladies support group.” said Christine Griffiths, fundraising and events manager at The Pink Place.
In June 2010, The Pink Place was created for women with breast cancer and then in September 2013, the Charity decided to open to all types of cancers. By September 2016, The Pink Place created The Blue Space, which was dedicated to men affected by cancer and their partners.
Christine added: “The Pink Place offers a range of free wellbeing services, support, counselling and mindfulness classes both ‘in person’ and via Zoom to anyone from initial cancer diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond.
"Our aim is to help combat the feelings of loneliness, fear and anxiety and I would urge ladies and gents affected by cancer, not to suffer in silence, but to get in touch with the charity. Tel/WhatsApp: 07899 970841 email: info@thepinkplace.org.uk.”
