A MAJOR road in Popley has reopened following the death of a 22-year-old man on Wednesday (January 19).

Popley Way had been closed from the Aldermaston Road roundabout to the junction with Tintern Close yesterday (January 20) after officers carried out inquiries and launched a murder investigation.

The stretch of road was closed while officers carried out their inquiries.

Hampshire Police confirmed a scene, adjacent to the road, remains in place while officers continue their investigation. 

Police were called at 10.46pm on Wednesday, January 19, by a member of the public who found the 22-year-old man in Abbey Road, near the junction with Popley Way.

He was taken to Basingstoke hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Police closed the road in the early hours of Thursday morning, and it has remained closed throughout the day.

A 25-year-old man from Basingstoke has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

He was arrested after officers were called at around the same time to a report of a disturbance at a property in Melrose Walk.

The two incidents are being treated as linked.
