A MAN has been charged after a Saints fan was assaulted at a train station.
Mason Preston, 21, of Nutwick Road, Havant, has been charged with common assault by the British Transport Police.
He has been released on police bail until his next appearance at Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court on Monday, February 28.
He will appear at court charged in connection to the incident at Basingstoke railway station on Saturday evening.
As reported, a video of the incident, filmed at the station on Saturday, sparked widespread condemnation.
However, taking to social media following the attack, officers have said the injured fan is "doing ok".
In a tweet, Saintsfccop, an account run by Hampshire Police's Football Unit, said: "Pleased to say I have just spoken to the Saints fan who was assaulted on Saturday."
The incident came on the day Southampton faced Coventry City at St Mary's.
At the time, a spokesperson from British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to Basingstoke station at 8.21pm on 5 February following reports of a fight.
"A man was assaulted, but declined medical treatment."
