STRONG winds have been battering Basingstoke today, with public transport services cancelled, roads closed and hundreds of homes experiencing power cuts.

A red weather warning was issued by the Met Office for Basingstoke and the surrounding area as Storm Eunice hit Hampshire. The warning meant that there was expected to be flying debris “resulting in danger to life”, along with damage to buildings and homes, with roofs blown off and power lines brought down.

Homes in the borough have been experiencing power cuts throughout the day, with SSEN saying that it hopes for electricity to be restored by 11pm.

The provider said: “Storm Eunice is currently and continues to cause significant impact to the electricity network and our customer's supplies. Due to this we currently cannot guarantee electricity supplies will be restored soon.”

Those needing to use public transport have also been majorly affected. Stagecoach announced this morning that it was cancelling all services through Hampshire. The company says it hopes to resume services by 5.30pm.

South Western Railway also reported that a tree fell on the line at Overton, stopping services between Salisbury and Basingstoke. As of 4.30pm all train services were cancelled with the provider saying it could not guarantee any trains will run for the rest of the day.

A number of roads were also blocked, and some remain shut, due to fallen trees. Throughout the day our live blog has listed a number of those that were closed.

There were a number of scary moments for residents as strong winds caused the roofs of several garage blocks to be rippped off.
