A BASINGSTOKE man has been fined for attending an illegal gathering near Basingstoke train station during a Covid lockdown period.

Liam Kyle Brewer, 21, of West Ham Close, was order to pay a fine of £100 in total after he "participated in a gathering in the Tier 4 area" on March 12 2021.

Brewer met up with two or more people on the railway station approach, a "public outdoor place", without a "reasonable excuse" under the legal restrictions at the time.

At Aldershot' Magistrates Court on February 14, he admitted the offence and was handed a £66 fine, plus a £34 surcharge, making £100 in total.

The law enforced was Schedule 3A to the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (All Tiers) (England) Regulations 2020, which set out the different rules in the tier system.

The Government is set to expire all the temporary provisions of the Coronavirus Act, emergency legislation passed by Parliament on March 25, 2020.

In his speech on Monday (February 21), Boris Johnson said that 36 of the original 40 provisions expired this week.

The remaining four, relating to innovations in public service, will expire in six months, "after we have made those improvements permanent via other means".
