A BASINGSTOKE businessman is among seven volunteers at a Lifeboat Station in Hayling Island who received awards for their courage in rescuing three people whose lives were in significant danger.

Daniel Macpherson, who runs a motorcycle repair business named Just Motorcycles at Moniton Trading Estate in Basingstoke, received the award from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI).

“I am very excited about the honour,” said Daniel, who had been living in Basingstoke for 17 years, before moving to Hayling Island 12 years ago.

“This award is about bringing the team together and carrying out the rescue.”

The seven volunteers crew were presented with awards for the courage, boat-handling skills and teamwork shown when saving the lives of three men in a stricken yacht.

RNLI chief executive Mark Dowie, who paid tribute to the crew for their actions on June 28, 2020, said: “These celebrations, where we are celebrating actual real bravery and skill, are incredibly special for the history of a lifeboat station and its community.”

Daniel won a vellum inscribed with ‘thanks of the institution’ for his courage, determination, decision making and boat handling skills.
