Basingstoke Ladies 1s suffered two consecutive defeats against Bath Buccaneers Ladies 1s and Clifton Robinson’s Ladies 2s last weekend in the Vitality Women’s Conference West.
Basingstoke, sponsored by K J Smith Solicitors, faced Team Bath Buccaneers Ladies 1s on Saturday at home. It was a fast and furious game right from the start. Bath took an early lead from a neat reverse tomahawk deflected in from the penalty spot. Basingstoke regrouped and forced some outstanding saves from the Bath goalkeeper; however, they could not get the ball past her. An unstoppable run from GB's Vicki McCabe saw Bath go 2-0 up at half time.
Basingstoke continued to battle and won a string of penalty corners but were denied a goal. At the other end an exceptional Bath routine found the roof of the net. Basingstoke clawed a goal back from a penalty corner slotted in by Roxy O'Dea but the match concluded 1-4.
Basingstoke played their second game of the weekend on Sunday 27th Feb against Clifton Robinson’s Ladies 2s. Basingstoke took the lead in the first quarter after a well worked penalty corner, deflected into the goal by Catriona Bausor. Clifton responded and scored an equaliser to make it 1-1 at half time. Clifton came out strong in the second half and scored two further goals, with the game ending 1-3. Next week, Basingstoke Ladies face Cheltenham at home at 2pm.
Basingstoke Men’s 1s travelled to face Havant Men’s 2s this week. Havant started well, converting a penalty corner with a drag flick after 1 minute. Basingstoke were able to regroup quickly and attacked down the right through Dean Record, who passed the ball to Danny Bowden to drive down the baseline and slip it back to Record to convert to make it 1-1. Basingstoke continued to press on and a superb ball from Record was deflected in front of the keeper by Dan Stewart to score the second. Two further goals from Graham Garrett-Land & Liam Harrison then made it 4-1 to Basingstoke.
With 10 minutes to go, Havant earned another penalty corner, which was again converted with a drag flick to bring one back. Following this, Basingstoke broke out from the back with a ball down the left to Record, who put the ball passed the goalkeeper to score his second of the game and secure player of the match as the game ended 5-2. Next week, Basingstoke Men face top of the table contenders Oxford Hawks 2s at home at 11 45am.
Basingstoke Ladies 2s were looking to continue their strong run of form as they faced Wycombe Ladies 1s as home. Basingstoke started excellently, playing the ball around the Wycombe defence well and earning themselves a penalty corner. Emily Shepherd was able to slip the ball across for Milly Raybould to deflect into the goal to put Basingstoke 1-0 up at half time. Wycombe came out fighting in the second half, but Basingstoke defended well to ensure Wycombe could not convert any of their penalty corners. Basingstoke regrouped with a penalty corner themselves, which Madeline Saunders converted to make it 2-0. Basingstoke were not done yet and a few minutes later, Sienna Boyce beat the Wycombe goalkeeper in a 1v1 to make it 3-0, closely followed by back post deflection from Gilly Dunning to secure the 4-0 win.
