THERE are some inspiring youngsters in Basingstoke who are making a real difference to where they live and putting some adults to shame with their determination and positivity.

This year, the Place to be Proud of Awards has brought back the Young Role Model category.

This category aims to recognise individuals under 21 years old who have shown real achievement, either in a hobby such as singing, dancing, acting, in a sport, in enterprise, in raising money for charity or in doing something special for their community.

The award last year was won by Ben Soones and judges said: “Ben is a worthy winner and a role model to all of us, gifting his time, skill, and knowledge to the benefit of many young people across a wide geographical area. His generosity and willingness to support those around him mark Ben out as an exceptional young man who has led by example.”

The award is once again sponsored by Queen Mary’s College.

Principal Mark Henderson said: “Queen Mary’s College is a long-term sponsor of the Young Role Model category at the Place to be Proud of Awards, which is a great opportunity to recognise young individuals who stand out for their outstanding achievements and contribution to the Basingstoke community.”

The awards recognise the contributions made by individuals, groups, organisations, places and initiatives that make our borough a diverse, vibrant community and a great place to live and do business. Individual categories are sponsored by locally-based businesses.

Nominations are free to enter and can be made online at www.destinationbasingstoke.co.uk.

The closing date for nominations is May 2.

All nominees will be invited to the awards ceremony to be held at The Haymarket Theatre on June 16.
