Basingstoke Men’s 1s secured six points in two days as they had a double header weekend to continue their fight for promotion.
On Saturday, Basingstoke travelled to face Fareham Men’s 2s. Basingstoke started well and scored first to go 1-0 up from a drag flick penalty corner conversion from Graham Garrett-Lang.
Basingstoke continued to put the pressure on Fareham with Dan Stewart winning the ball in the D and forcing Fareham to save the ball off the line with a foot, earning a penalty flick.
Player of the match Graham Garrett-Lang stepped up once again to convert the flick and put Basingstoke 2-0 up at half time. Fareham came out strong in the second half, bringing 1 back through a penalty corner conversion.
Basingstoke continued to have many chances but were unable to convert. With 30 seconds left on the clock, Basingstoke conceded a penalty corner which Fareham thought they had converted; however, the goal was disallowed as the ball had not been taken outside of the D and Basingstoke claimed the three points.
Basingstoke’s second game of the weekend saw them travel to face Eastcote Men’s 1s on Sunday in a rearranged league game.
Basingstoke started well, with Dean Record scoring the first goal for Basingstoke. Eastcote’s goalkeeper kept them in the game with several great saves to keep it 1-0 at half time.
Eastcote came out strong in the second half and were able to pull back the equaliser. With five minutes to go, David Fox converted a well worked team goal to put Basingstoke 2-1 up and secure the three points.
Basingstoke’s final league game is at home next week against Newbury & Thatcham Men’s 1s at 11 45am. They require one more win to secure promotion for next season.
Basingstoke Ladies 1s suffered a defeat as they travelled to Exeter this weekend to face Exe Ladies 1s.
Player of the Match, Laura Pitfield scored the only goal for Basingstoke as the Ladies lost 1-2.
Basingstoke Ladies 2s suffered a heavy defeat as they hosted Southampton Ladies 1s who are second in the league.
Basingstoke were able to soak up the pressure in the first half, despite only having 11 players, and kept the score at 0-2 at half time. However, after an injury, Basingstoke were down to 10 for the remainder of the game. Despite hard work from the ladies and a fantastic strike from Sienna Boyce to pull one back, the game ended 1-11.
Basingstoke Men’s 2s lost 1-3 at home to Chichester Men’s 2s. Basingstoke Ladies 3s won 1-0 against Trojan’s Ladies 4s with a goal from Jude Bird.
Basingstoke Men’s 3s lost 0-3 at home to Wimborne Wayfarers Men’s 1s. Basingstoke Ladies 4s lost 2-5 to Isle of Wight Ladies 1s, the goals from Amy Rowe and Kirsten Hazelwood.
Basingstoke Men’s 4s beat Portsmouth Men’s 4s 3-1, with two goals from player of the match Will Delves and one for Pete Wood.
Basingstoke Men’s 5s played their outstanding league game against Basingstoke Men’s 6s as they continue their push for promotion. Basingstoke Men’s 5s won 4-0 with three goals from Steve Baron and one for Toby Osborne. To secure promotion, Basingstoke Men’s 5s need to win their final league game next week against Fareham Men’s 7s at 1:45pm.
For their final Saturday of league games of the season (April 2), both Men’s and Ladies 1s are in action at home at 11.45am and 2pm respectively.
Alongside them, Basingstoke Ladies 3s face Southampton Uni 1s at 10.15am, while the Men’s 5s play at 1.45pm.
