A BASINGSTOKE teacher is taking on a charity trek to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.
Danika Vaughan is a teacher at The Vyne School and has been selected out of 1000s of applications to take part in a 100km charity trek across the Pembrokeshire Coast for Coppafeel Breast Cancer with a team of a celebrity captains in June.
The winner of last year's I’m a celebrity, Giovanna Fletcher is heading up the trek.
Danika will be taking on the challenge alongside all the other successful applicants that each have a story to tell. Some have lost a loved one to cancer, some have had cancer, some are going through cancer.
She said: “As an educator, I am very keen to raise awareness and educate the younger generation into knowing that this cruel disease can affect them despite their age. I think we are especially quick to think breast cancer can only affect women when it can indeed affect men too.
"So for me, I want them to know the signs and symptoms and know not to ignore them. As a school we are also looking to embed content into our school citizenship curriculum surrounding cancer awareness and knowing the signs as well as our students knowing how to get support and to support their families. We ended the spring term with a fun wear it pink day for breast cancer and our students were amazing at stepping up."
As a collective, the team has so far raised £130k but individually have their own targets to hit.
In order to raise money she organised two fundraisers including a charity quiz at Chineham Arms on Sunday.

She added: "Growing up I witnessed my brother, my dad, my step dad go through cancer, all fighting through it. But I have also witnessed as a grown up my father in law, grandparents ande friends not winning their battle. I also see many students who are struggling with their own battles in their own home lives. Having support and being aware is crucial."
